Probably because it would defeat the purpose of the cobrolait because of the pillarless design. It would be like an open top experience for a couple of thousand dollars less.

Or maybe stuctural issues, again because of the pillarless design.

Not sure other than those two possibilities.

Might be considered a downgrade?

Given that the C Class coupe is available with the Panorama Roof there may have been some concern that buyers would associate the CLK with the cheaper 2 door C-Class if a Panorama Roof was offered. As it is, a recent interview with a head Mercedes official sounded like he was laughing all the way to the bank about how they were able to make a huge profit on the CLK even though it was not that much more costlly to make than the C Class it was based on. (See thread discussing the CLK as based on the C Class below.)

... and similar thinking probably led to cancellation of the hardtop cabrio

And in the same vein, cancellation of the folding hardtop top for the Cabrio as a value added feature seems to have been motivated by an interest in maximizing profit potential. Someone figured out that CLK buyers would pay the same price for a soft top as for a hard top so why bother adding value.

Angry Beancounters 2, Engineers 0

Maybe Daimler-Benz will soon be replacing the old slogan, "Engineered like no other cars in the world," with one that states, "Beaned like no other cars in the world."

no way. the SL and E also has panoramic roofs as options (not to mention the maybach). i hear rumors that all the models will have it as an option.

more likely, it is a structural issue. but i'm not sure. if the CL doesn't get the panoramic roof, then it would be consistent.
