Engine oil burning...any one have this issue?

My car has about 70k miles, and after a the typical maintenance, my engine is burning up oil. After 5k miles, the engine oil light appears and it says i'm low 1 quart. I continue to drive another 1k miles and decided to take the care in. The car was then 2quarts low!!!!

This is the second time it did this. the first time i didn't think any of..and now..I think my engine is burning oil.

Any thoughts?

I had the same problem when I had an ML320. It was actually when it was still under warranty and they couldn't fix it. Once it hit 50,000 miles, I got rid of it. Best of luck to you.

do you drive your car hard? also what oil do you use? after driving your car, park your car then wait a few hours and see if there are any oil spots beneath your car (that might be the 1st step).....possibly the gaskets are old and need to be replaced...

where do you get your car serviced?

I know these types of things are frustrating--especially when you think a Benz 'should not' have any problems...

sounds like its time for an oil consumption test and to possibly inspect the cylinder bores.

One thing you might want to atleast try, is to add (1) quart of non-synthetic ATF, or a BG product called MOA to the oil and let the vehicle warm up. Maybe add it to your oil before the drive home from work or when you are headed somewhere to get the oil changed. Just make sure the car gets up to operating temperatures and then drive it around for a bit, just not hard. If you choose to use the MOA stuff, you can add that whenever and drive around for many thousands of miles before your next oil change. They both serve the purpose of helping to clean out the engine and possibly un-stick some of the piston rings.

Change the oil and filter and make sure its full with no significant leaks. See if that helps any.. Its cheaper than a $7,000 rebuild anyways..

thanks guys...

I don't change the oil myself, so I'm sure MB is using Mobil 1 (since that is what they advertise).

I don't have any oil leaks, neither my driveway or garage has oil stains.

I don't think I driver hard, but when I drive is usually abover 80 - 90 mph. (mostly highways).

Well, I took the car in and MB said they could not see/find any leaks. They just added the sufficient oil needed. Lets see what happens next.

if you are concerned about it and plan on keeping the car and the car is still under warranty, I would talk to them about doing an oil consumption test to see if it possibly needs to be re-ringed or possibly need a new engine block if sufficiently damaged.
