04' CLK 500 Center Speaker Buzzing - It's blown!
So I've been reading about the center speaker buzzing problem (on Bose systems), and everyone has been trying to fix it by reflashing the audio system or fixing something in the dash from vibrating.
They're saying it sounds like a blown speaker or something. That's what my speaker sounded like.
Guess what? It's blown!
I took the center speaker thing apart, and took the driver out.
I pressed down on the cone of the driver and it didn't move. Considering the surround of the driver is very soft, it should move a lot (I've repaired speaker drivers before). So I tried pressing really hard. It was as hard as a rock! That cone couldn't move, so the sound would come out at best muffled.
Here is what failed: At the bottom of the driver, there is a metal cup which holds the magnet in place. In my driver, the magnet (it's a strong magnet!) came unattached from the metal cup, and magnetically attached itself to the side of the metal cup, pinching/crushing the voicecoil between the magnet and the metal cup. Voila! A broken driver!
I'm sure it's a $100+ part, but it needs to be replaced, and the shape of the driver dictates a Mercedes part, not a generic 3" driver.
Anybody have one for sale? Did you replace your CLK audio system and want to sell your center speaker to me?
John

Part number is A203 820 04 02, and Promotriz International (promotrizint.com)sells it for $48.50 +shipping. Any reason not to jump at that and get it? Nobody wants to sell me theirs?

I got the speaker today from the dealership for $48.95.
It sounds so much better now! Finally, the stereo doesn't suck after all. Previously, it was either tinny or muffled, and it was driving me crazy.
Now it sounds natural.
