strange radio problem
2004 CLK320 w/ 60k mi CPO. While driving and w/ the radio on in normal volume, on a few occasions the volume suddenly jumps to the maximum for a couple of seconds and then backs down to either normal or very low. This has happened at least 10 times in the past 2 months. I took it to the dealer 2 months ago, and they couldn't reproduce the problem, but they changed the amps anyway. Last month I took it again for the same problem, and they couldn't find anything wrong. They said they'll need to charge me inspection fee if i take it in again for the same problem, even though it's a CPO. Has anyone experienced this problem w/ the radio?

Our sound systems have among other things, a microphone that measures cabin sound levels and adjusts the volume accordingly (the highway is loud so volume is adjusted up, when you get off the highway, volume automatically goes down). If this part of the system is malfunctioning, it would cause the problems you're describing.

I used to have that annoyance before when I had my w203. Ever since I had my w208 then the w209, I did not notice it anymore to warrant a visit to the dealer. What i did was pay them a visit and they changed my car's settings.

it was around 8 years ago. dont remember what the setting was. All it told them was that i noticed the volume go up and down and when i got the car they said they had to change a setting. however, if you say that your volume goes up to max then down then i think we have a different problem. mine was just a fluctuation on the volume. take it to another dealership and see if they can find the problem. i go to the one in walnut creek though.

it's the Bose audioilot system that adjusts the sound level in relation to the amount of ambient noise, do you have a system in your car? (subwoffers)
I had this exact problem, my solution was to take out the microphone for the audiopilot system, it located in the roof behind the sunroof panel. took about 10 min to take it out.

There is also the option to turn it off in the maintenance menu on the radio. I don't remember the codes, but if you do a search you'll find it. The dealership should know how to do this too.
