Question DIY info on spring replacement

I was wondering if anyone has any links to a DIY article or posting on replacing springs/shocks on our w209s.

I'm planning on buying H&R or Eibach springs and would like to replace them myself (taking to a shop for alignment afterwards). I've replaced springs and shocks on both of my SUVs. I know that the w209 will be different, I just don't know how different....

Any guidance would be appreciated.....

I'm assuming that you already have the strut compressor ? yea?? and not the one that you can loan from Autozone.

You should search on W203 section as well. Our suspension system is very similar to W203 and I remembered reading a thread about spring/shock installation DIY there.

If you've done it before then you at least know the basic. On our car, it not much difference. The only thing I know you will run into problems is, you don't have the tool (you can make your own tool and tap it out)to remove the the tiny "ring" that hold the upper spring plate. The aftermarket spring compressor will not compress the factory spring enough to remove the "ring". If I were you, just remove the front strut from the car and bring it to the shop for them to remove the springs and install the spring. It should only cost about about $50. I ran into these problems when I did mine.

I agree with Klinh about that tiny "ring". I was at the shop for the whole time when they did mine. It takes some times for the front but the rear is easy and I've never seen that tool before it looks like a socket but it has the weird shape.

I just replaced my springs last week and ended up taking the front spring/strut assembly to a shop. Check out this DIY from mymbonline, same exact procedures for the CLK.

Thanks for the info. I will plan on taking the front spring/strut assemblies to a suspension shop and let them replace the springs. Heck, I might just let them do the whole thing.

Do you think that a shop could do the complete replacement of front and rear springs for less than $300?

it depends on what kind of springs u putting on ? Most of our members here used H&R and some use Eibach including me. The H&R will be lower than the Eibach. For the Rear Pad Sizes ask Klinh I remember he got a thread about that and the whole installation is cost me $250 its just because I kinda know the guy there .

What made you decide to go with Eibach? Are you happy with them?

because its soft comparing to H&R and im still using the stock pads....Yes I am very happy with them. It didnt looks that good when u first intalled but if you give some times for those springs settle you will be happy with it. Again if u looking for lower then go with H&R.

I'm also thinking of going with the Eibach and not too sure about the pads. What wheels size do you have with them? Do you have any better pics of the wheels?

I just picked up a set of used (like new) 19" Monarch Euro 63RS rims (19x8.5 30mm offset, 19x9.5 35mm offset) with Toyo FZ4 (225/35/19) fronts and Bridgestone Potenza RE050 (255/35/19) rears. The original owner had them on 2005 clk500 with Eibach springs with no rubbing issues. But he did not know if the pads have been changes and also had to have spacers do to the much bigger breaks then my 03 CLK320. I still have not installed the wheels and want to do it together with the springs.

Thanks
