I'm in this same boat. I really want a fatter tire up front on my 2006 CLK 500, so I ordered the 235/45-17
A local mechanic popped them on for me, and complained they "rubbed bad".
Without a lot of thought, I ordered 225/45-17 and was still working on overcoming other fitment issues, with bolt size, offsets etc. In that time, I had a chance to try the 235s again, and it doesn't seem like they rub at all.
Wheels are square 8.5" ET 43 iirc, which I may have just as well used, but got fed up with. But they are on now, and ride is vastly improved.

My calc says only 1.4% larger overall, withing the <2% that is normally given as a margin of error. I felt around the suspension parts, and they clear by a very small margin, like 1/4" to 3/8"...tight.
Not to mention that the front tires are taller than the rears now....it doesn't feel weird, but smoother and quieter....perfect since I have a Cabrio
Reading CLKV8U has this size on is a source of comfort. I'm actually running missmatched wheels until my 2 new replacements arrive. I will definately go ahead and mount the 235/45-17"s on the new wheels.
