Quote: What I meant is that I also have a C63, and acceleration feels just about the same from the inside; that just by driving the cars its hard to tell which one is faster.
Gotcha, i didn't drink my coffee before reading that. When i drove my buddies C63 i "felt" that it was faster, but that's prob because i went into the drive knowing that it was. I wish our CLK's handled like the W204 C's. I'm choosing to get some KW V2's to make my CLK less boaty..hope that works.

numbers I found from Car & Driver
E9X M-DCT M3: 0-60 4.2 seconds
W209 CLK 63 AMG:0-60 4.3 seconds
W209 CLK 550: 0-60 5.1 seconds

let's be serious.

A 2010 MB S550 (same engine AND tranny as a CLK550) gets from 0 to 60 in 5.4 seconds. That car weighs 4,630 lbs. I'm PRETTY DARN sure the CLK550, being almost 1,000 pounds lighter, will get to 60 in less than 5.1 seconds. Maybe Car & Driver actually tested the M3 themselves and just copied the manufacturer's 0-60 time for the CLK.. I don't know.. I think the E92 M3 will be a little quicker than a CLK550, but not a lot.

On paper, S550's 5.4 seconds is from a ft roll, and 5.7 seconds from stop. E92 M3 and CLK 550 have similar curb weight. CLK550 has about +100 ft-lb. E92 has +40 HP. Both cars have almost the same amount of advantages and disadvantages with each other. I say it depends on the weather, driving conditions, and DRIVER. With stats so similar, 80 percent of who wins comes from the driver.

you do also know that its a "M" transmission, the shift points are totally different, sometimes "speed" doesn't necessarily be compared with power, its also the transmission too.

think about it.

C55 has 5.5L with that AMG programmed tranny= 0-60 4.7s
CLK550 has 5.5L with MB mapped tranny= 0-60 5.4s

I just want to be real about it. CLK550s are awesome cars, they are quick cars as well. But M3s are to be compared with CLK-AMGs, if the CLK550 really was quicker than the M3, then the M3 wouldn't be an M3.

like I said, just accept the fact. M3s are M3s, no matter what. and this is coming from a guy with a MB as well.

so start comparing the CLK550s with the new 335is, those things are monstrously quick!

I do agree with Gary that an M3 is a completely different breed of car and I have no illusions that I drive a sports car, but 0-60 times aren't everything and I think that there are situations that a CLK550 could pull away from an e9x M3 (from a roll, of course).

While you make a valid point, but i wouldn't go just by the 0-60 #'s. According to your numbers the C55 is .8 seconds faster than the 550, yet i've beat many C55's with my 550. I'd be willing to bet the 550 (due to it's TQ and HP) would have a better chance keeping up with a M3 than the C55 would.

Just got home from racing my 06 CLK500 against my friends 09 M3...we raced a total of 10 times, 5 times he drove the M3 and the 5 times we switched. The CLK won every single race. We are going to the track on Sunday and will post videos and time slips....bottom line, the BMWs are NOT as fast as everyone thinks...btw, my car is stock, just dropped.

i hate to say it, but i don't believe that one bit...the CLK550 vs M3 debate is already controversial enough, but a CLK500....come on, lets get real

hey guys, I just saw this thread. The other day I was in my 2007 BMW 525i and as I was coming home from dropping off my little girl at soccer practice, I saw a car weaving in and out of traffic on the 101 going northbound towards san francisco. I knew at this point that he wanted to play a bit so I threw my shifter into steptronic mode and switched into an open lane. I was playing with him, never really letting him close to me, but after about 10 miles I finally let him catch up to me and lo and behold it was a bugatti veyron! We raced about 20 times from various speeds (0-60mph, 100-200mph, 0-250mph) and I won every time by a few car lengths. Some times were very close and the veyron was catching up but I was only in 3rd gear while I heard his engine screaming LOL. I was also only pressing the gas halfway too, hehe. After I mashed on the gas pedal, the amount of torque created was so devastating the earth's rotation changed and we now have daylight savings time. (you're welcome guys) I just wanted you guys to know that since you read it from me, it must be true. oh yeah, did i mention i was running 87 octane and 2 of my cylinders were misfiring?
