Rear Suspension Weirdness

Rear Suspension Weirdness
My '06 CLK 500 with +/- 27,000 miles on it has started making a bit of a "bonk" sound when going over relatively small bumps (let alone big ones) and seems a bit less stable or composed, suspension-wise, in the rear end.
If I didn't know better, I'd think I was driving an American prairies schooner from the 70s with 100,000 miles on its failing shocks, but that seems unlikely given my car's age and low mileage.
Are there any known issues with the rear suspension? If not, anybody have any suggestions for what might be going on?
Oh, and, yes, I've made sure that there isn't anything bouncing around in my trunk.
Thanks

I drive the racism out of BadDebt. ;)
I had this issue awhile back on the drivers rear wheel...
it turned out to be the shock itself....it wasn't dead but, it was something to do with how it was mounted...and everytime I hit a bump or drive on uneven roads it will rattle...i believe it was a broken cup or something....it was a cheap fix.

Bad Shock
I had a local tire store put my CLK up on a lift and have a look around the rear suspension and they told me that they saw that the left rear shock was leaking.
I've put several hundred thousand miles on a variety of German cars and one SUV and never had the issue of replacing a shock come up once. Maybe I should be counting my lucky stars, but this seems a bit odd given that my car has less than 28,000 miles on it. Anybody had this happen before?
Since my car has only been out of warranty for a year and the mileage is so low, my mechanic a - 40-year MB specialist - is telling me that I should plead my case to the brand for a free replacement. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks
