weird problem
Hi all,
I had this weird problem happen this morning that I hope someone can explain to me. Sorry if there is a thread out there on this, my search wont work.
Anyway, I started my car this morning to go to work. As i was pulling out of my driveway, i turned the radio up louder and all i could hear was static. It was like i was getting bad reception or something. So i decided to plug my ipod in and the static was still there, exactly the same as when my radio was on.
So i get to work, shut off the car, then restart it and the radio and ipod both work normally now. What gives? Anyone know or had similar situations happen to them?
Thanks in advance.

I have a 2002 CLK430 that has the same issue. I think I have narrowed it down to the Bose Power Amp is going bad. It does it about once a month, and same thing as you if I turn the car off and then re-start it the sound system works fine. If you do discover this is the problem check Ebay first for an amp as the dealership quoted me 1K as in THOUSAND for an amp. There are a ton of them on Ebay used for $150.00 up. Good Luck...

They told me it was something with the center speaker (tech replicated problem) and it would be $260 to replace. And of course I'm a total moron cuz my car just squeaked out of warranty last month and it would have been covered. I suck.
He also said this is likely the cause for the radio/CD completely cutting out every once in awhile. (others have reported being able to wiggle a fuse to fix), although usually it goes away after a couple hours, or a couple restarts.
Not sure I understand that - unless the speaker occasionally shorts out and causes a power drain or something.

it seems that our cars have many gremlins with the radios.i have a different problem.sometimes when I'm listening to the radio with the engine off.the key on the acc. position.the volume spikes extremely loud.even louder than the max that the knob can go.it scares the **** out of me.

I know this is an old thread but happened to me yesterday. Left home and audio was fine. Stopped for a cup of joe and static all the way to the office on all channels. Went to lunch and all was well.
Figured i search on here and sure enough, here is the thread. Very odd. I hope this doesnt happen too often. I have enough other minor issues that bug the sh*t out of me.

Last novmeber one day I had static only on sat radio - so thought it was the sat. Two dyas later I had it on all audio sources - even cd. Has not done it since. One day in December I started my car and it was trying to make an emergency call. And i don't have Teleaid.

I've had it happen once, and I since I was listening to Sirius, I know it's wasn't the source. I figure it's a problem with the amp. Luckily, it was one-time occurrence for me. It hasn't happened again over the last year.

I hope I don't jinx myself, but it hasn't happened in a long time. Seems like early summer 2011 it might have happened once more, but not in awhile. I keep wanting a new head unit anyway since my car's original owner neglected to have the 1/8" aux jack installed and I can't use my MP3 player as an input - sucks! (first world problem, I know).
Anyone have good luck replacing their head unit? I'm concerned cuz Crutchfield's website seems to say that no units are compatible with a 2006 CLK 500 Cabrio with Harmon Kardon. Weird.

You have to run new speaker wire from the headunit to the trunk where you bypass the HK amp. The reason is that there is only fiber optic there now - no line-level speaker wiring. Oh, and forget Crutchfield - they are great, but they just don't deal with MBZ. You can easily put a double-DIN unit in place with the right faceplate adapter.

I had similar issues on my W203 C320, w209 CLK500 and on S500. Most of the time its the Bose Amp acting up and not head unit. Usualy when extra hot or extra cold outside.
On the C320 i managed to replace the amp under warranty (barely made it).
On the clk and S500 it was not happening often enough to bother me too much so i never got arround to it.
You can probably find one on fleabay for couple hundred.
