Air Flow

For my 2004 CLK320, the air flow selector of the driver side is not working properly. I can turn the knob to point to "top' vents (the light is off, so, automatic mode is OFF), the heat will still come from the bottom. In other words, I can no longer eliminate the heat going to the bottom vents. The passenger side is working properly.

Not sure how to fix this. Is there a master reset of this temperature control unit?

Any advise?

For now, I put a duct tape to block the air vents below the dash.

I think I remember reading there is a way to reset the HVAC controls. I found this on benzworld, not sure how accurate it is.

"Your Climate control unit may have to be reset. The reset works as follows: With the key in the ignition and in posistion 2 push both the defrost button and the recirc button (at the same time) for five seconds or untill the led lights in those buttons begin to flash. Wait for 30 seconds or untill the led's stop flashing. Switch off the ignition. Check the evaporator temp sensor and pressure sensor for correct functionality."

I tried and unfortunately, it did not work. The LED did not flash at all.

Anyone???

Since I cannot stop the hot air blowing to the bottom, I am using a duct tape to block the air flow for now.

I found out that I made the mistake by pressing the Recir and Rear-Defrost last time.
I just did it rght this time and after pressing both buttons for 5 sec, I saw the 2 lights flashed (Defrost-Recir-Defrost-Recir.....) continuously. The airflow would go from high to low and low to high... After 2 minutes, I shut off the engine.

It definitely did something but I don't know what it did.

If they didn't stop flashing. That means you have a broken flap arm. You need to take apart the dash remove the motor and replace the arm. They make a better stronger arm now. And it's fun to do. Not!

Yes, it did not stop flashing and also, the problem persists. Do they sell this flap arm separately? Do you have the part no?

Guess the duct tape stays.

Great. Thanks.
I don't think removing the climate control unit is something I would like to do myself. How many hours would a dealer charge for this?

About 5. They would remove the center consol, wood trim around the radio, the radio, driver side lower dash, cup holder and trim below, and the radio shelf. It's in the lower left hand area of the heater box and it still sux to get too. And depending what kind of climate control package you have there is one on the right side too. Make sure you back seat is clean because that a good place to put stuff as thay remove it.

To think of it, there must be a motor to control the flap.

Is it possible that this motor is defective?
