Decisions Decisions
So on Monday I got into an accident completely destroying my 2002 C320. What basically happened was that I was sitting at a red light and some IDIOT dialing or texting on his phone slams into the back of me pushing me out into traffic; I then got t-boned by an SUV (very bad day for me). Im pretty banged up and the doctor says I cant drive again until my injuries heal and I complete physical therapy, which should be in the next 8-12 weeks.
Im going to get a replacement car when Im all healed up and Im REALLY leaning toward a 2006 CLK350/500 convertible. BUT I have other cars in mind as well, such as the 2007 328I coupe, and a 2008 c300/350(though I dont really want another sedan). I could also consider a CLK350 coupe IF I did some work to it, like the AMG package and some ECU tuning. My question to you guys is:
In your opinion, what should I lean towards as my first choice? The 500 convertible or the 350 convertible and throw on the AMG package? Im sure the AMG package is pretty pricey cuz you have to lacate it and then get it painted and fitted and blah blah blah. Is it even worth it to do all that? I love the looks of the CLK500 but what worries me is the gas mileage; Ive never owned a V8, the c320 was my first car.
I drive around 60 miles a day going to school which amounts to around 300 miles a week, and I dont want to have to get gas every 3 days. The V8 is kind of intimidating to me to be honest. I know "we dont buy these cars for gas mileage" but for me, my perfect car has to cover all the bases. Im not expecting the CLK500 to get 30mpgs but I just want an idea of what other drivers are getting in the V6 and V8 models. I did some searching and I really couldnt come up with a sollid real world figure for either car: the numbers I was reading were all over the place. SORRY for writing so much, but THANKS for your time
I get about 20mpg on average, my girlfriend's 2008 C300 doesn't get that much more.
I had to make the choice between a 3-series coupe and a CLK coupe not too long ago, and what settled it for me was the fact that the 550 has an AMG kit that separates it from the 350, whereas the 335i looks the same as a 328i. If you're looking strictly at the 350/328, I'd recommend you go with the 328i coupe. The CLK just looks really wimpy without an AMG kit on it.
And as far as the gas mileage is concerned, the cost of the gas that a 500 will consume over a 350 will be FAR LESS than what it costs to paint and install an AMG kit on a 350.

You gotta also remember that a lot has to do with how you drive it when it comes to gas mileage. If your 60 mile trip/day to school is mostly high way driving, you can expect about 20 miles/gallon w/ a CLK 55 i would assume. That is what i have found with my CLS 55 and ive only driven it for about 2 wks as of now

I say go big too. Performance + the mean looks is all you need to think about and if you read on here a lot you will learn that gas isnt that much of a difference.
