strange ticking behind driver
after 100mtrs or so, there is a ticking sound that emerges somewhere behind the driver's position. It correlates to speed (so revs).
My first thought was a fuel pump, solenoid or sensor switch - but the fuel tank is on the opposite side of the car.
any ideas or how to diagnose ??

bit embarrassing really.............came to realise that the ticking was speed dependent not rev dependent - so put the car up on ramps and checked out the rear-end.
the "ticking" was a small branch that had wrapped around the driveshaft and was hitting the tunnel guard.
Amazing how sound travels - I would have sworn it was somewhere in the rear bulkhead..............

My C240 had a similar problem. At low speeds, after the engine had warmed up, it would hear a similar ticking noise coming from the engine that was road-speed dependent. I could shut off the engine and coast and it would make the noise. After lots of checks and worrying that it w as a major transmission problem, I found that at the very back of the driveshaft, the plastic sound deadening material under the chassis had come detached, and when warm, would curl down and scrape the driveshaft.
