Check Engine Light + Service Required at same time ?

Check Engine Light + Service Required at same time ?
On my new (to me) CLK350 that is coming up to 52000 miles, the 'Service A required in xx days' just appeared at the same time the check engine light came on. Are thise two things linked (i.e. check engine cuz you need a service) or do I need to be concerned that the check engine light came on ?
The link between the two is not addressed in the owners manual and I couldn't find a thread on the forums.
