Please check my VIN for Balance shaft issue?
The early 722.9 transmissions are definitely more trouble-prone. The most common problem is needing a new conductor plate (common, as in most all need this). It's about $1500, and a dealer-only job.

Hi, I've been looking all over the engine bay for the engine code, but can't seem to find it. So can someone please decode my VIN for me and let me know if my engine is within the affected range?
Thanks
Vehicle: '07 E350 4matic

WDBUF87X87X217801 has M272 #480110 - It's beyond the balance shaft problem range.
VIN WDBTJ72H17F214183
Is this affected? 2007 clk550. Also should I spring for a 2008 model if it means avoiding problems with the transmission?
thanks for all the help

i just checked. I think this car is within the affected range. http://www.mercedesmedic.com/check-m...y-vin-m272273/
the engine number is 087217 which is older than 088611 which means this car will be a headache to own. Thank God for these posts, dodged a bullet there.

"Guru" is bad enough! And looking up these engine serial numbers is easy - I can use my local copy of EPC, or the online "Russian" version (http://www.auto-parts.spb.ru/cat/cat...&client=dr2000). Then you get the engine number and compare it to the range in the TSB:

Hi Rodney,
Any chance of checking on this VIN? Clean carfax. 2007 Mercedes C230 sport sedan. CEL code P015 and I will be replacing magnets on camshaft timing module as this seems to be the fix for this code but I am concerned about balance shaft failure and interested if the engine is in range. If it is, I will take car to Mercedes to see if the repair was done for the TSB.

You have M272 engine #438120, which is in the range for potential balance shaft failure. If you are having the "Scenario #2" failure of the camshaft solenoids, I doubt that thee engine has had the balance shaft replaced, since most dealers replaced the solenoids along with the balance shaft. But, don't panic! Balance shaft failure is rare. Even though engine is in the range, only a small percentage actually fail.
I guess it could, but you'd need to compare it to an engine run the same way, same miles, and without balance shaft failure. Honestly, I would not worry about it. The number of engines ailing doesn't even show as a blip on the car review sites and magazines.
