100k Maintinance and some parts questions.

Hey All,

Need some input and thoughts on doing the labor on my own.

My CLK500 Cabriolet was sent to the shop for 90k maintenance.
I paid them to diagnose the problem, but My bro and I will replace the parts ourselves. We work on custom jeeps so the CLK500 should be toooo much harder.

* There is a load whine / siren when the AC runs.
The mechanic said its the water pump... Is that possible as the noise only is on during AC? The water pump, pully and belt look under $300 in parts.

* Check Engine light.
Mechanic said he thinks its the Speed Sensor on the Transmission conductor plate. He said this work is little harder. However, I'm having a tough time finding the part number.

* Last but not least... I need to change the spark plugs and breather hoses under the engine valve cover. I know this is easy.

You may need to add some things to the tool chest, like "external" TORX sockets. Otherwise, you'll probably find the work similar to your jeep, maybe with a little less room to work with the V8 crammed into a small engine bay.

It's probably not the water pump, but instead the tensioner pulley and/or idler pulley. Honestly, even if you are going to change the water pump, I'd go ahead and change the idler and tensioner, too.

The speed sensor in the transmission is a major deal - you have to replace the valve body and the conductor plate, It's not crazy difficult, but it;s expensive. You Better have a good lift to get some clearance to work underneath. However, transmission problems don't illuminate the MIL - get your codes pulled (preferably with SDS so you can get the transmission codes, too) and post here so we can help determine what is wrong.

You have 2 plugs per cylinder. It's not a hard job, just a lot of wrenching to replace 16 plugs. The hoses are also easy, and relatively cheap. I;d probably just get them from the local dealer.

Try the back two plugs first, if you can't do those plugs then don't even try doing a half job.

DEFINITELY good advice. Some people do have problems getting the plugs out, but I've not encountered that. or at least what others thought was "nearly impossible" was just what I expected. I cut my shade-tree mechanic's teeth on old muscle cars and junk yard classics, so rusted-in-place plugs (and everything else, for that matter) were typical.

Thanks All!

Were going to have the mechanic do the tranny work.

We'll do the rest on our own.
