Things to do

Went to the dealership to fix the headlight, the tech checked the front end and suggested the following replacements:
1. Right front wheel bearing
2. Poly-belt
3. Crank pulley

I am not surprised because my car is getting old (155K miles).

I thought the wheel bearings should be changed in pairs. I asked and they said I should change only the right front. ???

I need to do this soon also. I can't tell if it's sold in a pair (left and right) or the description is left or right. It says 2 kits per car though.

I would go ahead and do the front pair, personally. No need to neglect one side. I also replace tires in pairs though (did all four when I bought the car. Replaced the rear pair once and will soon replace all four again when the fronts wear out on me). I'm about due for my 91k mile service. Did you get in and do anything special while they were pulling spark plugs?

I checked and wheel bearings do not have to be changed both sides.

Too bad I did not talk to the techinican. I do not know how immediate this replacements should be.

For the poly belt and crank pulley, are there a schedule to repalce them?

The bearings do tend to wear faster on the right side, as in the US you drive on the right and on the outside of the road is where the most dirt, debris and dust is. This makes it wear harder... just like on my car it will be more likely to have the left side wear out faster...

Makes sense. Thanks.

Checked with the dealership. The part alone costs about $85 CAN but with labor, it will cost $588. This translates to about 3 hrs of labor. Does this sound right?

I went to my friend's indie and they confirmed that the right front bearing was bad. They put my car on the hoist and showed me the noise while turning the wheels.

There was a slight noise from the left as well so I asked them to change both for me tomorrow.

I went to the indie and they replaced both wheel bearings earlier today.

When they test-drove the car, the ABS warning light came on in the instrument cluster. I now have 3 malfunctions in my car: ABS, BAS and ESP.

The shop hooked up the computer and there was no malfunction. They said they have to reset the computer and the guy who knows how to reset it is not around today. I have to go back tomorrow.

Does this sound right? Does the computer have to be reset after changing the wheel bearings?

NO LONGER ACTIVE
First of all, what "computer" did they check codes with? If it's just a generic OBDII code reader, that won't access the ESP/ABS system. My guess is that they either damaged or improperly installed the wheel speed sensor when working on the bearings. If the job is done properly, there is nothing to reset.

Yes, I went back today and they replaced the seal (like a ring with magnet). All working now.

The indie was not that knowledgeable but at least he was accountable. He went to buy the seal from the dealership.
