I have an Escort 9500i in my car and an 8500 X50 in the kids car. I think Escort now owns Beltronic and they are just scaled-down version of the Passport. I can say nothing but good about the Escort detectors. The 9500 has GPS with the ability to lockout bad signals (like from radar-activated doors). The 9550 seems to be more "filtered" than the 8500.

To pick the detector that is right for you, you should ask where do you drive the most? urban, suburbs, rural? Highway or main roads? Straight or curved roads? Flat or hilly?
This is a recent radar detector test that I just read: http://www.radardetectorforum.org/wi..._Detector_Test

Thanks for the infos guys. I googled it and got alot of infos. A good radar is about $450-$500. I don't think I want to spend that kindna of money on a radar when I only average 1 ticket per 5 yrs. I just got a ticket 2 months ago for doing 85 mph on a freeway with a speed limited @ 70 mph.

Every single one of us drive above the speed limit at least once !!! Sometime is just bad luck when we got caught because wrong days, times and places.

One thing I like about the GPS-enabled Escort 9500 is the ability to lock-out known false signals. Even so, mine rarely goes of with false alerts. If I'm on the highway enjoying a little extra-legal speed and I get a K or Ka alert, I stand on the brakes.

The passport escort with gps is my choice too. Been having mine for 4 years now. Like Rudney said, not only does it pick up cameras with the gps but when you come across annoying signals everyday in the same spot like automatic doors for stores it automically blocks them after a few times going through the same area. I like the valentine one but it doesn't have this feature so I'd rather the radar that saves me a few extra annoying beeps a day. If you want to spend less then get the passport without gps, you can find them online for less than $300

Passport 9500 and the Passport IQ are what I have now. The GPS anti falsing feature is fantastic. Pricey, but worth it to not have to hit the brakes everytime there is a DOT radar.

For those who use the Passport 9600 or 8500 detectors, does your LASER warning go off when you honk the horn? When I had the 8500 in my BMW X3, this happened and I figured it was just an electrical or vibration anomaly, but this happens sometimes with the 9500 in the CLK, too.

No never had that happen. It might be where its placed in your car. It could be the laser sensor on your review mirror that points straight down. If you take the radar detector and wave it under your rear view mirror it activates the laser warning. That's my only guess

I think the horn anomaly is due to them using a "SAW" filter in the electronics to cut down on errant RF interference, and the audio vibrations from the horn sets it off. It doesn't do it all the time in the CLK, and never did it when I was driving the C240, or in my wife's GJC, but the X3's horn set it off every time.

Hey Rod do you think this mount will fit our mirrors http://www.ebay.com/itm/ESCORT-REDLI..._qi=RTM1301575

I doubt that mount will fit because there is no barrel behind the CLK's mirror - our mirrors are attached from the top. I've thought about trying to fabricate a mount that would attach to the mirror, but honestly, I have my detector stuck to the glass right under the mirror, and I use the hardwire cord run up the a-pillar to the mirror, so it's not a high priority.

The cause of the false radar alerts is due to EMI. The power obtained from most cigarette lighters is very dirty. Most Radar detectors are looking for laser pulses in the 100 to 238 pulse per second range. In some vehicles activating the horn or in other cars turning on the windshield wipers, or in some cars especially those with superchargers and some turbos, hard acceleration will cause laser falses, because all of these can produce EMI that replicates the 100-238 pulses per second signals.
