You have two filters - a dust filter that installs in the plastic housing under the hood, on top of the battery. This is always sued to lightly filter air coming into the ventilation system. The activate charcoal filter installs under the passenger side dash. It is only used when you press the filter button (center of the passenger-side temperature control dial).

I'll bet that most charcoal filters are still the one from the factory. For most people, the button to use it is probably the least used button on the car. Some don't even know it's there. So the filter is never used. Unless you use it, not much point in changing it.

On a slightly related issue, the air in the cabin of my '06 CLK500 is pretty musty smelling. Is it possible that my air filter needs changed out? Even when I turn on the carbon filter, it still doesn't make it any better.
Any thoughts?

If by air filter, you mean the one above your battery under the hood, it can't hurt. Those can get nasty quickly. But you probably have some mildew deep in the innards of your AC system. They make sprays just for that. They are not just some air freshener perfume, they supposedly attack the odor at it's source. You remove the filter housing above the battery and spray it in with the fan running. I got mine at NAPA.
