plugs and filter

My 2009 CLK 550 cab with 39K miles was due for a service A today and the service advisor told me I was due for new plugs and fuel filter, total tab would be about $1,000. She told me that it was due because of age not mileage. And she didn't press the issue when I told her I would wait.

Is this service necessary or can I wait?

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

I believe the schedule to replace spark plugs is 100k miles or 5 years. You should refer to your owner manual.

If the car runs well, I would wait.

Yes, it's 100K or five years for plugs and every 65K or 5 years, whichever comes first. A MY2009 car could have had a calendar year 2008 delivery so it would be int he 5-year range. As for the $1,000 price, that is just ludicrous! Retail on the OEM fuel filter is under $70, the plugs can be bought at most auto parts stores for under $100 for the set of 8. Labor for both is maybe 2 hours and is a fairly easy DIY if you can turn a wrench and be careful with the fuel loss from replacing the filter.

Thanks for the comments. The car is still in the shop for the service A and I'll check the owner's manual when I get it back. The delivery date was 12/08 so the the 5 year schedule is coming up. But it runs great.

I have always strictly followed all MB service schedules on the 3 I have owned. Even though the mileage is low on the CLk, I'll probably meet their schedule by the end of this year. I might do the plugs myself but I have never even seen where they are under the engine cover. I'll check that and the filter out before I have MB do it.

Thanks again.

Spark plugs are super easy. Just remove the engine cover and they are right on top of the valve covers - dead center of each cylinder. Just remove the bolts holding the coil packs in place and pull them off the plug, then use a spark plug socket and wrench to remove them. It's easy and no knuckle-busting like on the older M112/M113 engines.

if its something you can do yourself you should do it!!if not take it to a good mercedes specialist.never ever take it to the dealer unless its covered by warranty.i learned that the hard way.
