Rear Center Brake light - anyone solved this problem?

2005 CLK 320 convertible.
I am having an intermittent problem with my 3rd rear brake light - the one in the center of the trunk lid. I have searched the threads, but haven't seen a solution to this specific problem.

Can't tell you what triggers the problem or what heals the problem. When the malfunction light comes on the dash display, pressing the brake pedal results in a momentary blink of the brake light and then the light goes of and stays off.

Today started off great. I checked the operation and everything was fine - all bulbs work. Then after putting the top down and up, I noticed the warning light on again. Seems like - maybe - sometimes - the problem is triggered by opening/closing the trunk. Not for certain.

Before I tear into the trunk and try to trace the wiring, has anyone solved this problem?
Thanks for any assistance/suggestions.

Does the malfunction light say "3rd brake light Out" or something like that?

I have only seen "Left Brake light Out"

Although the light would work intermittently, I could find no frayed wires. So, I ordered a new light - replaced the old one - and I haven't had the problem again. YMMV.
