Manual / Tiptronic mode not able to activate? / not showing in cluster?

hey guys,

so i test drove a clk320 2005 today - with premium pkg. that had both xenon's inactive - not sure why both bulbs would blow out. car did have about 100,000mi on it.
car was in VERY DIRTY condition. anyways - when i tried to hold the gear lever to the left / right to activate the manual shift mode - nothing happened. what do you guys think is wrong? and even the modes for Comfort / Sport should show you where the odometer displays - but nothing was showing... ECU problem?
all that was showing was odometer reading..
thanks in advance for replies.

I think that is a problem with communication between the cluster and the EGS. With those problems, unless they are giving this car away, I'd not consider it.

Ya mine doesn't work either. The only way I get mine to shift into manual mode is if I use the downshift on the paddle itself. Other than that, the upshift works on the shifter itself.

would it have a major affect on the ECM / TCS?
i mean the car drove ok. only drove it around the parking lot and the guy says he has never used that mode. the Comfort / Sport setting is also useless in this case as the computer is acting like these features don't exist on the car.
would you guys consider buying a car like this for $6000? the damn HIDs don't work

that's whacky. have you tried to leave the battery out ? reset the ECU? i dont know.. mercedes has issues that no car maker in the world has with their cars. i had an e500.. learned my lesson about glycol contamination and what not.. jerky transmissions... motor mounts cracking and recently the issue i have heard that almost every clk 2006 and up suffers from that balance shaft issue.
i mean c'mon.. luxury car? more like piece of junk

I hav reset the TCU i think (key on, full throttle for 30 seconds then turn off for 2 minutes) and that hasn't done anything. Haven't tried the battery. But the downshift now working on the shifter shouldn't be that big of an issue right?

*I* would buy it for $6K, but I have the skills and tools to fix most of these problems myself. If you don't, then my advice is to walk away from it.
