What is up with my tail lights?

One of my taillight bulbs burnt. I got a "Tail Lamp, Left" message on my dash so I replaced it. Now the message displayed said "Tail Lamp Left, Substitute Bulb On". I noticed that when I plug in the lamp module with the bulbs in it the lower 2 lights don't illuminate. When I remove the left bulb module the right side works perfectly. I went to MBZ and got a replacement bulb thinking the car might not like aftermarket but still the same thing.

I would appreciate any help or thoughts

Were you able to solve this problem? I am getting the same thing happening. Actually I know the bulbs work because when I unlock the car the lower bulbs illuminate before the car decides to misbehave and switch to the upper two brake lights.

I ended up replacing all of the bulbs instead of trying to track the bad one down. Not expensive.
