First thing is to get the VIN of your potential purchase and post it in the thread labeled "Please check my VIN for balance shaft issue?" to see if it is a candidate for that problem

a MY2006 CLK550 has the M113 engine, so no balance shaft issues there. However, it will have an early build of the 722.9 transmission, and they tended to be more problematic until about MY2008. If you want a V8 CLK, I'd recommend either a MY2003-MY2004 CLK500 or a MY2008-2009 CLK550.

Guys thanks for your replies. Rodney, whats the mileage on you car & how much is a tranny rebuild cost? Do all 2005 & 2006 have tranny problems & balance shaft issues?

I would love to get a 2008 550, but they are out of my price range

I have about 61K miles now. I don;t think all early transmissions fail, but they just fixed several common problems over time. There are really two main problems with early 722.9 transmissions. One is a bad speed turbine speed sensor. I hear it costs about $3000 for the dealer to replace the valve body and conductor plate (and they have to do it as it requires a "live" reflash of the TCU code), but I have also heard (from Glyn) that they can now just replace the conductor plate and speed sensor for much less. The other problem is much worse (and luckily less common). It's a catastrophic failure of the main fluid pump. it disintegrates and pretty much takes the entire transmission out with it.

Rodney, thank you for the info I will definitely stay away from the cold 2005-2007. How about the Clk 55 any major issues with them also I am looking at car with 100000 on them do these cars go for 200000 miles?

The CLK55 is good - a solid M113 engine, paired with the solid 722.6 5-speed transmission. The CLK version has no supercharger to worry with, either. Probably the biggest concern on the CLK55 will be tires and brakes - they are slightly more expensive than the others and wear more quickly. As with any car, once you approach 100K miles, you start worrying about things like the cats being at end-of-life, worn suspension parts (though on the CLK, that seems to happen earlier) and oil leaks. Oh, the valve/head covers on the M113 engines do tend to leak, but the gasket replacement is very easy and inexpensive as a DIY job.
