CLK500 tuning experience

hey guys, just wanted to take a minute to give a review after tuning my clk500 with oliver at speedtuning. The car did become noticeably faster. I raced a friends m3 and he had me by about a car length. Same result with a lexus is350 (with full exhaust and headers). The car does shift at higher rpms now, however im pissed it doesn't go to redline (even when i have it in manual mode). If the car would redline and let me have full control of the shifting, i probably would have beaten both the m3 and is350. Do any of you out there know what i can do to have the car let me shift on my own at redline? I've been told to call AMG because there might be a way of setting up the shift pattern so that it redlines. I've also been told to take it to a pro dyno tuning place and have it tuned again. Thanks for taking the time to read

None for now
I'm looking to tune my CLK500 with OE Tuning, and all I have so far is an exhaust. How much higher do the shifts occur? Does it idle at higher RPMs? Any problems with it so far? Is tuning recommended? Thanks!

Could you hold a gear to redline before the tune?

I think you will have to retune. I imagine the tune you have is on the conservative side to protect your engine. If you could not hold to redline before, I would not tune it to do so. Otherwise, you can have it retuned. Ask the shop about the redline and the speed limiter beforehand.

I have a Kleeman tune and it redlines, I believe, at 6400. When I slam it I'm too busy to actually watch the needle but when I use my G-Tech to get a dyno plot check it holds 2nd to 6400-6500 rpm.

The shift patterns are different depending on the gears. 1st gear before the tune it shifted at like 5200rpms, now it shifts at 5900. The rest of the gear around 6000-6100. The idle is the exact same (400-500). and so far no problems. I would recommend the tune.

Fatz, I have never been able to hold a gear to redline. I talked to my tuner and he said in order to get to redline i need to have my TCU flashed, because the TCU is what controls my shifts. Thats another $300. But i haven't decided if i wanna do that yet.

Just send out your ecu, if you do it with speedtuning as i did, they claim to get it shipped back the next day.

Aspirollari, regarding your race with your friends' M3; when you're in that hard acceleration mode, do your revs remain high between shifts or are there big rpm drop offs between shifts?

To be honest i couldn't say, I wasn't really paying attention to my odometer at all, to much adrenaline from the race because i was actually pulling on him at first. But if i were to guess, after shifting at like 6000 it would drop down to 4800 or so for the next gear. But it just takes it so long to shift in comparison to the SMG m3.

Yeah! I drove my SIL M3.... It does click off the gears quick.... dang!

My TCU was tuned at the time of the ECU tune. When driving aggressively, the rpms will remain high (in anticipation that you intend to go fast). The shift from 2-3 can be abrupt, but I generally don't feel 3-4.

I believe maintaining the higher revs (ECU) works to force a quicker shift command by the TCU.

I haven't tuned any cars other than this one. So I'm no expert, but this foray may give you some questions for your tuner.

My shifts from 1-2 feel like they slip in S mode, but in C mode since it starts in 2nd gear there is no jerk in the shifts. Would an ECU tune help or would I need a TCU tune? If I tune my ECU it's from OE Tuning

ACG Tuning has a shop in bk and they do kleemann and other tunes

why not go with OEtuning or eurocharged? they both have options for the ecu genie which allows you to change tunes or go back to stock for service.

i believe OEtuning has an android app option as well

I would personally go with a reputable company that has been around for a while

NO LONGER ACTIVE
There is actually an OEM firmware flash that can help the 1-2 shifts as well as the "clunky" downshift to 1st. Most dealers will do this for about $100-$150.

if you're looking to have faster, more aggressive shifts, then a tcu tune is your best bet. The TCU is what controls the shifts patterns and by tuning it, would allow the car to go to redline which in turns will shift harder because its revving higher
