Buying a used CLK200K 2002 W209

Hi all,

I've joined these forums to get a good idea of what I'm about to get myself into by buying a MB. I have now finished my search and looking to buy a CLK200K W209 model. Currently I am in talks with a 2002 model owner and plan to buy it from him for 2700 EURO. Currently I am in final year masters degree and will be beginning a real job in one year. I am working part time and making 200 EUR a week with no other responsibilities such as rent etc.

The owner has agreed with me to do the NCT (equivalent of MOT UK) prior to purchase which would give me some relief as to I'm buying an OK car. I would like to know of your experience with these 2002 models of cars and how reliable they are and what I can expect to spend on the car on a yearly basis. I believe I can do the oil change, normal routine maintenance stuff myself. My main worry is the hype people have gotten me worried about how repairs cost so much....
I believe if the car has been treated well and passes NCT it shouldn't cause me any major problems for at least a year.

Please advise

There have been reports of premature timing chain failures on these M271 engines. If it breaks, it will do other damage to the engine. Some people recommend periodic replacement. It can be a DIY job, but it's more complex than an oil change.

Some things to look out for are a leaking pilot bushing on the transmission electrical connector - it's and easy and cheap repair, but needs to be addressed before the oil wicks into the TCU. Another item is the Behr radiator that can allow transmission fluid and coolant to mix. You can do a visual check using this as a guideline:

Thank you so much Rodney for your prompt advice! I will keep these in mind when buying the car. Do you believe I can keep up with maintenance for at least year until I get a proper job? I would love to know what an actual CLK owner thinks as I have been told a lot of negative things by non-owners.

It really depends on your abilities to do work yourself. My advice to anyone considering a used MBZ is you need to either be prepared to do the work yourself, maybe investing some money in tools and such, or you better be ready to pay dealer or indy shop prices. Most parts on these cars are really no more expensive than other makes, but give the additional complexity of these cars, there are more parts that could in fact fail that wouldn't even exist on others. If you are on a tight budget, my advice is to buy something more simple and mainstream that will be easier and less expensive to maintain.
