SRS Light - 1 Malfunction

I could sure use some help. I replaced the turn signal switch on my 04 CLK320 and now I get an SRS Failure Light - "1 Malfunction".

Did I break something or is this just a "latched" failure light?
What might I have broken?
If I broke the clock spring will a simple continuity check tell me this?
The Mercedes Part Center lists a clock spring but no price; what does this mean?
Is the clock spring separate from the steering angle sensor?
Does the "1 Malfunction" indicate that it is an active code, i.e a current fault?
I have read that ODB tools will not reset an SRS code - is this true?

Note: I also started the car while sitting in the passenger seat which I have heard can cause this light to come on.

Sorry for all the questions but any help would be appreciated.

NO LONGER ACTIVE
Did you happen to turn on the ignition while the airbag was disconnected? If so, that's it. This error will require either SDS or a specialized tools to diagnose and reset.

No I didn't do that. And the battery was disconnected the whole time.

I checked and the continuity seems good now. But it might have been bad the first time I started the car.

Do you know if the "1 Malfunction" means that there is a current fault?
Or also does it say that with a latched fault?

The only "1 Malfunction" I have seen on mine is with a bad rear bulb. When I fixed the bulb, the malfunction cleared up immediately.

So I would have to say it is an active fault.

Are you getting the SRS yellow dash light on also.

When you scroll up when you have the "1 malfunction" text, does it give you any more info?

Thanks, but I am pretty sure that SRS faults latch. They will only clear when hooked to special diagnostic equipment - even if the fault is gone. I have discovered that much from reading the forums. But I haven't found any specific discussion of whether just the SRS light latches or if the more verbose message ("1 Malfunction", "Restraint System Defective", "Visit Shop") also latches.

I was hoping there was a way to tell whether I have corrected the fault before I take it in to the shop. I would like to fix as much of this myself as I can.

The "1 Malfunction" message just means that there is one system malfunction message to see on the cluster's MFD. If you have an SRS error and, say, a bad bulb, you'd have "2 Malfunctions". There could be one or more stored DTCs in the SRS system, but you won;t know 'til you pull the codes.

First things first try to read the code. A very common code is the B48 which is the mat sensor inside of the passenger seat.

It could possibly be a loose wire somewhere... best of luck!
