'06 CLK500 intermittent soft top problem
I have a 2006 CLK 500 with a strange issue I have been unable to isolate. about 2 months ago when I tried to put the top down the following steps occurred.
1. cluster indicates 'top in operation'
2. all of the windows roll down
3. nothing, no hydraulic noise or movement.
This lasted for about 5 days and then forgetting about the malfunctioning top I hit the switch and the top worked perfectly for about a month. Now, however it is back to not working at all for the last few weeks.
Any advice or opinions of how to troubleshoot would be appreciated.

First of all, check to make sure the windows have lowered. I have seen a door glass not lower due to sync problems and the top won't operate in that case. If you lower all the windows and the top still won't open, then I would guess it's a bad microswitch. These tell the soft top controller what position the various parts are in. If a switch fails, it can't tell so it won't operate. There is a thread in the forum where I posted the WIS docs for all of these switches.
