I wonder if someone tried to retrofit KeylessGo on this car and failed? Post your VIN and I can lookup the data card to see if it was a factory-fitted option.

The gearknob button is probably a broken wire, you can probably do a search and find some threads where people talk about opening up the shifter and finding the broken wire. You would have to order a spare key. Also what's the VIN of your car? If you run it through Mercedes's Epcnet, it should tell you if you have the keyless go feature.
So if i changed the door handles , the problem of keeping the key too close to open the car will be solved ? And keyless entry will work ? What is mercedes epcnet ? I am new to that stuff

There's a good chance that replacing the door handles will make them work again, water seems to get into those buttons and they end up corroding. As to keeping the key too close, it's supposed to be within 3 feet in order for the car to detect it. If it's much less than that, trying changing the batteries in the key again, there have been numerous threads about people getting bad batteries even when new. Buy a good set from a reputable company.

Epcnet lets you find out what parts are needed for the car, it will also give you the datacard on the car which will tell you what options the car has. All you have to do is post your VIN which is a long series of letters/numbers which is located underneath the windshield and in other locations. In the US, EPCnet is free, other countries you might have to pay for it. The VIN identifies the car no matter which market it is made for worldwide.

Yes, just post the VIN number.

The receiver isn't in the handle, the handle just has a couple of buttons in it. It could be the antenna. When they don't work at all, it's probably the handle, if you have to be really close, then maybe it's the receiver/antenna. As mentioned earlier, only hooking it up to Star diagnostic at the dealership will tell you for sure unless you can find some other member in the area that has a star diagnostic system.

Yup now i am sure that i do.I guess the driver side handle was changed with one that doesnt have the keyless buttons. So my problems in summary are : 1)gearknob button 2)the driver side door handle 3) the passenger side door handle have keyless go buttons but doesnt work despite i keep the key so close and press the buttons and nothing happens. 4) Antenna which is why it doesnt open from 3 feet .

The regular door handle is much cheaper than the keyless go one so someone screwed up in the past. As for #4, not sure what you're talking about, keyless go doesn't seem to be working because the start button doesn't work and the handles don't work to open and lock the car. If the buttons on the fob don't work unless you're really close, that could either be the fob or the antenna. That's why we keep going back to Star Diagnostic, they can tell for sure, otherwise you're just throwing parts at the problem and hope something works. First step would probably be to replace the driver's door handle, no matter what's wrong, that shouldn't be a waste of money.

cetialpha5 is right. i did some research on the subject from curiosity. It seems there is a Keyless Go control Module in the trunk, but i couldnt find out of the antenna in the rear windscreen is related (your key only works on the IR sensor from the door, so the antenna is shot for sure). On STAR you can individually test the Keyless Go components from the door sensors to the start button. If the dealer wants to steal just find an independent garage that has STAR (most mercedes benz specialist garages will have it). Or come by to lebanon with your car and i'll get you sorted

Sorry for the late reply.I will go to a STAR garage and see. But i have 3 questions 1) does the start button not working have anything to do with the key not working except from really close/keyless feature not working or it can just be fixed alone by repairing the wires under it or sth ?
2)When i press the button on the passenger door handle the car says 'key not detected' what does that mean ?
3)Does fixing the keyless go automically fixes the key not opening the car from far ?
Thanks in advance
Haha thanks u r lebanese ?

1) Not sure about that
2) Thats interesting.. seems like the car isn't reading the key.. looks like its most probably the sensors that read the key. (Might be the Radio antenna)
3) Radio Antenna is going to fix reading the key from afar for sure, but still again i dont know if its going to solve the keyless go problem, On STAR you can test these sensors and even reset the key.

Thats right! I'm Lebanese and the family is Lebanese. But I'm born in the US, but never lived there, so technically I'm American too.

If it isn't the battery, try wiggling the gear shift lever forward or left to reposition it to see if it works. I sometimes have to reposition mine to get it to fire. Remember it is not instantaneous - have to hold it depressed for a second or two.

Good luck.

The first thing I recommend is get a second key! Having only one key could leave you stranded if you lose or damage it. If KeyLess Go then works with the new key, you'll know the problem is your old key. If not, then you're going to need the help of the dealer (or a qualified tech with SDS) to have it properly diagnosed.
