Does anyone know how to manually release the shift lever

Hello... I have been troubleshooting a battery drain. In the process my ABS light came on and the shifter is stuck in the park position.

Does anyone manually released the shift lever? From looking at the operators manual (pic attached), I found the access port for the screwdriver, but there is some type of plastic guide that only allows you to go down and to the right of the access port. Should I be depressing a button inside the access port, or is there a mechanical switch I'm attempting to engage?

Lastly, does it matter is the engine is running while I attempt. Any ideas are welcomed.

Figured it out

I was able to get it out of park by using a ball point pen instead of the screwdriver suggested by the manual. Attached are self-explanatory pictures. I didn't try with the car running. It felt like I was depressing a button on the other side of the pen. It does go in at an angle down and to the right. Hopefully someone else will find this useful.

Very good info....

What kind of pen tool did you use? BIC..... good job.

Do you think some of these issues you're having are the result of removing many of the fuses during your troubleshooting?

It was definitely self induced from checking all the fuses in the attempt to find out why my battery was being drained. I currently have my ABS light on, and the shifter will get stuck on park if placed back. the shifter will still be stuck on park if I put it back. I'll have to figure out what I may have done to cause the ABS light to go on, and stay on. I was removing the battery terminals to test for amp draw. I might have tripped some type of immobilizer on the anti theft system.

how it works

I accidently got my pen stuck and inadvertently figured out how it all worked. Take a look at the pics.

A RMS clamp on/over meter may work better, making it unnecessary to break the circuit.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll see if I can pick one up tomorrow. It would make it a bit easier.
