Gas smell after fill up??
Hello guys, I just filled up my 05 CLK500 and my garage has a very strong gas smell, but there is no leak visible. After some research W111 owners had a huge problem with the gas sender. Do you know if our cars have the same problems? They got a recall and can go to a dealership with an extended warranty issue and get that replaced... Any info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Thanks!

There are three common points of failure: (1) The seals on the fuel pump/sender units can fail - redesigned seals are larger. (2) The filler neck on the tank can crack (3) the fuel sender (left side) can leak from it's electrical connector.
The emissions warranty covered this for 8 years/80K miles, but you are beyond that. It's easy enough to check - remove the rear seat bottom on the left side, then remove the access panel and if you have gasoline pooled on top of the sender, you need to replace it. I'd go ahead and replace the seals (both sides), too. I believe in your car, the sender also contains the fuel filter, so it's probably time to replace it anyhow.

Interestingly, after driving for several miles this morning, the smell is gone... On same year model than mine (05), E Class owners had that problem and NHTSA made MBUSA do a recall and now they have a 15 year 150k extended warranty on that problem, basically they couldn't fill up to the top their tanks or the gas smell appeared until they did some driving to lower the tank level...
I might stop by the dealership and ask???

It's definitely worth stopping by the stealership and checking whether they will cover it or not. Be ready not to accept their first NO and argue with them that they should cover it.

Mine does the same thing. I just never fill it up, unless im driving on a trip. Although,I am going to be changing my fuel filter soon, so I'll just change it out then.

I recall one forum member (here or maybe on benzworld) coated his in epoxy and that solved his leak. I found a random photo on The Internet and added a green arrow to show the spot that leaks.
