CLK Cab.
I have not gotten specifics from our factory rep. on if the top will be hard or soft, but he did inform me of the release of the new model. I was under the impression that the coupe would change this year and the Cab. would stay the same until '03 and then the new body Cab. would be introduced. This is not true! There will be one whole year where there will be no CLK Cab. available. This means that after the '03 model Cab. is built and is ready for the next M.Y. to be released, there will be no Cab. to sell along side the coupe. We will not see the new body CLK Cab. until '04, possibly as a 2005!!!
As soon as I get solid info. on the top I will pass it along!

2005 CLK Cab.
It is no longer a rumor, it is true. We will not get the new body CLK Cab. until late 2004 as a '05 model.

I wouldn't be surprised if the new CLK still has a soft top. A folding hardtop works great on the SLK and SL because it only has to span over the two front seats and a small area behind them. On the CLK, the top would have to span over the two front seats, plus the two rear seats, making the entire mechanism extremely bulky, heavy, and large. Still, don't quote me on that either, just look at the old Ford Skyliner.

Not exactly sure, as of right now. I do tend to agree with mbtech208 that a hard top on the CLK would be a bit too large and bulky to keep up with todays market of who can out perform whom!!!! I'll try to dig a little deeper to get the real truth.

IMHO, dont expect a hard top for the CLK.
The reason is - Performance.
CLKs have a history of performance which will be destroyed by putting the bulky hardtop onto a CLK. Imagine a CLK 500 hardtop convertible running 0-60 in 7 seconds... ewwww.
Not a good thing for MB.. personally i love the new design although i am planning on getting the E 500 .... and then enhancements that have gone into the CLK are simply awesome.

wouldn't it be great though if the clk gets the retractable hardtop and the v8 blower.....then there wouldn't be an issue with power and we as clk owners would have the best of both worlds....a cab/coupe with none of the downsides of a cab and an engine that would eat volvo's for breakfast, m3's for lunch, and carrera's for dinner.....

After looking at the photos of the new CLK coupe, there is no way for a hard top to fit in that small trunk given the way all the current hardtops work. It would have to be a new technology. Not the clam-shell hardtop.

Several have mentioned that the clk will not have a folding hardtop because the size of the top folding over 4 seats would be too big.
the Lexus SC has 4 seats and it does just fine (even though it is smaller that the clk). The way to overcome this is by moving the seats slightly forward and more vertical. The 3 series convertible (soft top) is designed as such.
Lastly, for those who say that a 4 seater cannot have a folding hardtop, the 3 series was engineered with one as a working prototype, in early 2000, but it was abandoned because it would raise the price of the car too high.
And never again shall anyone bring up a ford in this discussion again.

naw...actually i'm pretty sure it'll have the hardtop...one of the spy photos of the clk (somewhere out there) had what seemed to be a retractable hardtop.
we'll find out in about...3 years!

New Roof Technology
Just as I suspected. A new technology would be the only way for the roof to fit in what looks like a small area.
It looks as if you could open up the entire roof as a sunroof or you could go convertible.
Is this not going to be ready for 2003 model year? If so, why does the picture have 2002 on it?
