no you misunderstood, the transmission control module has to be programmed for the gear change so it doesn't mess up the traction control and abs system. That doesn't actually change the gear ratio. So the programing is $499. But i bought a whole rear differential with the different ratio for $350 shipped. so it will cost me a total of $850 to do it.
it will make a huge difference for of the line acceleration

Just an FYI - on the 722.9 transmission, the TCU is in the conductor plate, and it is a part of the anti-theft Drive Authorization System, which required SCN coding. Just be careful because if the tuner screws it up, you'll be paying the dealer $1400 for a new one.

i would guess it probably going to put me up an at least 600 rpm than its currently at.

Rudeney would you recommend doing it on my car if I can find a good deal on a 55 differential for my 7-speed? I have almost 100K on the clock and did the 722.9 service at ~97K (2.5 months ago). I'd really like the increased acceleration but what else would be affected by this upgrade?

Honestly i dont feel as these transmissions are that touchy, I do way more 722.6's than 722.9's at work, ive never had to replace a conductor plate in a 722.9, they are good transmission, better than the zf's in bmw's

I will wait until you try it out since you already ordered the differential to see if it's worth it or not. I might get a Eurocharged ECU tune for a good price that EC is giving me next week.

this upgrade isnt a few horsepower, actually its none, but will make the car night and day,

The case connectors leak allot, they are cheap part, but fluid will wick up the harness if its not taken care off. To me that is the major flaw. They do have some pump issues as you said.
Typically my parts cost on a 722.9 is less than most common Ford transmissions. a 5r55 that's in explorers and mustangs among others is far more expensive to build.

Typical symptoms of conductor plate failure are going into limp mode. Valve body problems will exhibit as clicking and clunking when shifting. The fluid pump will whine, and when it fails, you'll know it because you'll leave steaming trail of transmission fluid behind as you slow down with a dying transmission.

just got my wavetrack lsd, probably later this month i will do the swap. I'm sending the tcm to kleemann to have it changed for the correct gear ratio.

Subscribed! I just upgraded from a 03 CLK500 to an 08 CLK550. Although I love the newer 7 speed, its got too many gears for the rear end gear ratio. The lower 3 series gears would really help I would think!
If this works out for you, Id seriously consider doing it as well.

I've got a 2007 AMG E63 that I'm trying to swap 3.06 Rear Diff Gears in. It was suggested to me by one on this thread that I should get the SRT8 Diff that comes with the 3.06, so I got one with 25k mi off eBay for about $300. It was also mentioned that I get the Siemens VDO VGS2/NAG2 TCU "Tune" done by "Tony" at RACeIQ, but when I called the local RACeIQ, the guys said he would call "Tony" but has not called me back. After explaining to him that the TCU is in the Transmission and sits on top of the Valve Body, he commented that he thought it could NOT be done with his equipment, but that I contact Renntech? So I did, and although they have a "TCU Tune" it doesn't account for anything other than OEM gearing!
I've also been told that it could be done with the China made K-Tag Kess programming devices, but all I've been able to glean is that may be able to copy from a working ECU, EPROM and other files to another ECU (as well as to clear codes like STAR/Xentry) , but there's no mention of it being to hook up to a TCU? After further review, it appears that in order to program, the chip itself must be directly visible (i.e.- by way of removing the cover of the EPROM) to which the nodes of the KTag Kess must be deliberately affixed to the EPROM of the TCU, impossible to do with the NAG2 as its cover is fused. This system may work with those TCU which reside outside the interior of the Transmission, unlike the NAG2 which is placed above the Valve Body inside the Transmission which may be programmed via OBD or even a direct connect by disconnecting the Electrical connection and attaching directly to the TCU that way?
