Driver's Rear Window goes down only 6 inches

The drivers rear window will only lower 6" when either operating it with the switch or in attempting to put the top down. This window not lowering, of course, stalls the top in mid-position.
What is going on here?

Thanks

NO LONGER ACTIVE
It's either in need of re-synchronization, or you have a broken regulator mechanism. First, try to re-sync it: Pull fuse #32 (dash fuse panel) for a few minutes to reset the left rear door controller (yes, I know there is no "left rear door" but it's the same circuit as on the W203 sedan that powers the rear window controller). After that, try lowering the window halfway, then raise it fully and continue to hold the switch in the up position for an extra 10 seconds. If that doesn't help, then you need to replace the regulator.

None for now
My regulator broke when I tried to lower the rear window and I heard a loud snap and the window was stuck open. The regulator is expensive (~$500).
