2005 CLK500 trans will not return to P
Start vehicle, shift through positions with no problem. Attempt to move shifter up to R or P will not work as shifter will go no further than N.
If the parking brake is on and you remove your foot from the brake pedal, you can return to R or P.
I assumed it was a faulty brake light switch as was typical in earlier cars, however the switch has only two contacts and the brake lights are working, so the switch must be good....
I am sure this must be a fairly common issue.

The switch is actually in the ESP system, so it could be a problem there. But if you can shift from P, then that would not be it. I suspect maybe a problem in the the transmission. I;d get codes scanned from ESP and TCU.
