Dreaded coolant visit workshop

I've had the coolant visit workshop come on a few times now, especially when I'm stuck in traffic. At first I thought it was the radiator fan, but it is turning on. The last couple of times the warning sign has come on the temperature gauge has gone up to just over 100 deg. I was just about to pull over, out of the traffic, when the temperature dropped back to normal (I'm assuming the fan finally switched on). The rest of my journey was fine, with normal temperatures. It almost seems like the radiator fan is coming on later than it should, but when it does turn on it works normally. This is a periodic issue with normal operating temperatures most of the time. The car is a 320CLK with just over 100k.

Does anyone have any ideas/experiences with this?

How is the coolant level? Any signs of leaks? The coolant reservoir is prone to cracking and leaking with age.

+1 on both above. Don't let it go too long, your car is trying to tell you something. I would pull the thermostat and test it if the reservoir is not leaking.

What color fluid do you have in her?

The coolant level is fine and there are no signs of leaks. The coolant is a greenish color.
At what temperature should the radiator fan engage?
I just went out to the car and got my wife to rev it at 2500 rpm and I watched to see when the coolant fan engaged. It engaged after about 3 mins at 90 deg.
That's the strange thing, this works OK most of the time. Does this help with the diagnosis?

I had the same issue with my CLK + my C class. changed the thermostat and problem solved. No idea why it would trigger my thermostat, but both times that it happened and on different cars i noticed the thermostat was indeed shot when it took it apart.

The coolant should be orange, not green. Maybe somebody put some Prestone in there? It;s not compatible with the MBZ coolant. I'd consider doing a flush. Xerex G-05 is compatible and usually readily available.

The coolant in my 05 CLK55 is blue and is Mercedes factory coolant.

+1, Blue, I just checked.

OP, it may look green thru the reservoir so, when cold look inside with a light.

+1 Never ever use green on our cars.

Both coolant on my 2005 and very late December 2007 were a reddy orange colour. Factory fill fluid.

My PAS is and should be, blue/green.

The power steering fluid in my car is a very ight amber, almost clear. My coolant is blue. Both are MB products. I suppose MB has different color fluids for different countries.

That is also the colour my PAS fluid was, However I was assured by dealerships and sources online that the fluid that should be in there was in fact the blue-green. And that the straw yellow coloured fluid was an out of date/incorrect fluid for my car. Hence, I flushed the old stuff out and put the recommended fluid in that the Benz dealers told me was correct.

Mine original coolant looked like orange Gatorade. And so did the Zerex G-05 that I replaced it with. Both in the MY2007 CLK550 and MY2002 C240.

Thanks all. I've ordered the thermostat and also the coolant temp sender (might as well change that because of the easy access). I will do a complete flush with new coolant. Hopefully this works. I'll keep you update.
