NO LONGER ACTIVE
The system needs to stay pressurized in order to keep from boiling (lookup Boyle's Law )

So is the liquid on the ground coolant? What is the level in the reservoir?

the liquid on the ground was oil...and the level seemed about right it didn't appear low.

Oh geez, that will certainly be your culprit, but as above, you need to confirm the sensor is working as well.

Hate for you to replace the fan and then find out it was the sensor.

How or who determined it was the fan?

Sounds similar to my situation...I have a 2000 clk430 and I replaced the thermostat and radiator, yet the temperature will sometimes go past the "80" almost to "100" and I also loose coolant almost every other day. What could be causing this??

Oh Good, now to locate an honest wrench, the most difficult if you can not DIY.

For some yes, it should be just 4 10MM bolts and the connector. The tricky part is maneuvering pass the radiator hose, you may need to disconnect the hose, so be prepared to do so and get ready to plug the openings as not to lose too much fluid.

Try your best not to get on the painted surfaces, if so flush with water right away.

For you, wear gloves and eye protection.

So just touching base with everyone, my mechanic said its something electrical because the fan is working off and on. Is it common for the wiring to mess up sometimes?

I think first of all you need a better a better mechanic - someone who is devoted to MB not Hondas or Fords.
Second, I would look at replacing the coolant sensor and see if your fan works correctly.

after you start the car cold, how long did it take for the temperature to go that high? if it shoots right up there, it's probably the temp sensor. sensor is just like $10 part, if you're at it why not change out the thermostat as well. $25 part.

You can try to by-pas the sensor and place a 12v source on the connector to see if the fan will run. If it does then it is most likely the sensor.

+1 above, how long does it take to over heat?

temperature doesn't start to rise until I start driving so probably after 10 miles....especially if I'm having to do a lot of stopping at lights and stuff

that sounds normal, if it's the fan not working, i would think it only overheats in stop and go traffic but once you hit the highway the temp should come down. can you tell if the temp comes down in the highway speed.

no so when I was just on the regular city roads the temp slowly climbed to about 90 after 10 miles then it goes past 100. I noticed also when it's a stop n go type of thing it shoots up but when I'm back in motion it kind of comes down..the mechanic noticed the fan wasn't kicking on then it came on but back off..so he believes it's a shortage somewhere

It could still be the temp sensor, it controls when to turn the fan on and off. or the relay, fuse or the fan itself if you haven't rule that out yet.

if the fan is not coming on when it should, in city stop and go, you will heat up to extreme temps, but when you go on the highway the wind blows at your radiator so the temp drops a little.

Did you have your AC on when you were driving? IF you did your AC fan would be operating and cooling the radiator to some extent.

i would still replace the thermostat and temp sensor, it's the most common thing that would go wrong. when you change the radiator your mechanic should change them at the same time. he said your radiator was leaking and you top you off, when you top it off even with a small leak you shouldn't be overheating so changing the radiator will not fix overheat.

there's not much more that could go wrong, the most common parts are the thermostat and temp sensor and they are cheap to replace, diy.

I notice this in your video.
That's not where that tube suppose to go. You mechanic is a funny guy lol.

Ok, so I have some news...MBNZ230 thats very interesting that you pointed that out I am actually going to see if its still like that? If it is what should I do?

So I went to pick up my car from the mechanic it was left with him over the weekend. He claimed he could not see anything wrong with it. The fan apparently start working again.

So I picked it up took it to another mechanic, the mechanic put it on a machine, nothing came up except my brake lamp being out. He checked out everything else and everything appeared good, except that he mentioned I have bad oil leak around one of the gaskets. But he started the car let be idle temp did not raise. He drove it around temp did not raise. So I picked it up lastnight and drove about 20 miles home and the temp stayed around 80/90. Same thing this morning temp stayed around 80/90. The mechanic maybe it was sometime type of air in there or something that just needed to work itself out. Because now the car is back to normal with a new radiator of course. But honestly I think when I left it over the other mechanics garage during the weekend, he probably realized he made a mistake with something and fixed it. Because it is so strange how now everything seems to be back working. Thankful but kind of puzzled.
