2007 CLK 350 Convertible Suspension Overhaul?
The car other wise is in great condition. Other than the usual wear components, this car has had no maintenance issues. It is my wife's daily driver and it will continue to be as long as it runs good.
Based on the comments in the other posts, I think I need to replace some of the wear components. For the most part, I see nothing wrong upon inspection. There is some cracking in the rubber around one control arm bushings but sway bar bushings look okay compared to some photos I have seen on the internet.
So what parts should I consider replacing and how much of the work can I do my self? I think the struts are going to have to be done by a garage that has the proper tools. But how much can I do at home with my jack stands?
I am a pretty capable shade tree mechanic. But this will be my first major suspension job. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
As for the struts, they can be removed without a spring compressor. You can buy pre-assembled struts and springs ready to install. Or, rent a spring compressor and replace just the strut.
