I know! Another Performance Mods thread
Looking at buying a CLK200 Kompressor in the next few months and I'm looking some advice on performance upgrades.
Now before you roll your eyes and leave the thread, YES I have searched the forum and NO I don't want to be told to buy a different model, one of the reasons I'm opting for the 200k is that I can get a 6 speed manual gearbox so it's really the only option.
That being said, how much can I realistically expect to gain from the M271 engine through performance upgrades?
Pulleys, exhausts, intercoolers, cold air intakes, headers, etc etc what sort of gains are we talking do you reckon?
All help/advice welcome and appreciated...unless you want to tell me to buy a 350 or any other model

Subscribed....mainly as I also have a 6 speed manual version of the 200 k so would be interested to see the suggestions. Would also be interested to see any small mods that are commonly done to improve the power, efficiency or mpg of the motor......remove this pipe, blank off this tube, reroute this hose, replace this with that.....You know the usual stuff i find on forums about my other cars but seem difficult to find on the 200k. Maybe there just are no simple common mods done to these! Lol!

You clearly have not seen the cost of fuel in the U.K. Lol! Typically between $ 8 and $10 per (slightly bigger than yours) UK gallon. Plus I can think of about a million better power plants than that antiquated piece of scrap iron to put in!

The engine already has a cold-air intake. You can get an ECU tune, a performance supercharger pulley, and do some exhaust work, but I'd be surprised if you get more than 30hp added. Your engine has 168hp, and you're just not going to get more than a 20% bump. Actually 10% would be more reasonable. If you are serious about mods, I'd do before and after dyno test. The "butt dyno" is usually nothing more than placebo effect or additional exhaust noise.

I don't know how genuine their claims are but a couple of the pulley suppliers claim a gain of around 30 horses JUST fitting the pulley and 50-60 with the pulley and matching ecu tuning. No idea how likely those claims are...Just what I've read. In the past I've found it a lot easier to get far bigger gains from forced induction motors than NA.....more boost (with of course extra fuel and matching ignition curve) equals more power...up to a point. Usually you are safe up to around 50% over stock before the bottom end and transmission becomes an issue...especially on a manual gear box.

You'd do much better in gains with the 2.7 inline 5 turbo diesel. That came in manual form, I had one. Really nice unit, and gains can be pretty substantial on CDIs. Obviously it will behave differently to the 200k, but you can get a manual, and get more from it with the 270CDI. The torque could be quite something.

It's a noisy rough antiquated engine. For smoothness and civility there is no comparison to the 200k....I know...I have one in my other car a WJ Grand Cherokee....well I did have until it dropped a valve at only 141,000 miles and totaled the motor Lol! The good thing is that a cheap tuning box will push it to over 200 horses (161 stock) and big torque. Unfortunately, in the CLK, it had a problem it never had in the Jeep and that I'd a strange resonance in the body and through the pedals....only made worse by tuning. The V6 diesel version that replaced it was a vast improvement.

I agree about the gains on the 270 but I'm bored of diesel, really just wanting quick, petrol and loud lol
I know I probably sound like a picky f*cker but I've decided the 200k is the model I'm going for so its just about seeing what gains I can get!

I would buy something like an Eisenmann Performance Exhaust for your CLK200 and probably leave it at that. Make it sound nicer, give it a bit more go and then spend your money on petrol and tyres.
Simply drive it harder more of the time and enjoy using the performance it has. You can have a good time without lots of horsepower.
One of the best cars I drove for a while was an old BMW E30 318is. They don't make much power but they're loads of fun to drive to hard...

Just put a nice exhaust system on it. To this day, I still get excited from the sound of my exhaust--and I've had my current setup for around 2 years.
