I have 2002 clk 320 convertable that had only 7000 miles on it .And because I was overseas for 4 years it needs a fuel pomp change . Does any one knows if the fuel pomp is inside the tank or out side and exactly where ? And is this something that the mechanic can do in my garage or should be taken to the shop ? Thanks .

The fuel pump is inside the tank. The fuel tank straddles the driveshaft, so there is a pump component on each side. Remove the rear seat cushions and the round access covers underneath. The unit on the left side is the "sender". It has the wiring harness and fuel lines connections. Wiring and hoses run through the tank from it to the pump motor on the right side. The wiring and hoses are attached to the sender, so if you just need to replace the pump motor, you only need to work on the right side.

This is not a difficult job, but of course requires a high degree of caution dealing with the gasoline fumes. It's probably about an hour's job. Pump failures are somewhat rare, so what is your problem that requires this?

Thanks a million for your reply . The reason fuel pomp need to be changed is that I was away for few years and didnt have anyone to drive the car so the car was not driven .
We changed the battery and the starter works but the engine does not start so they said the fuel pomp must be changed . I have been going through hell with finding someone to do it . Can it be done in my parking or they have to take the car to the garage ? To make matters worse while I was gone the building has moved the car to under a ramp that is not accessable by a tow truck .

Did somebody actually test your fuel pump? Sounds like somebody is just guessing. You can test the pressure at the fuel rail under the hood. If a car sat for several years and never started it could be lot of stuff, including bad gas. Who said its needs fuel pump?

Thanks for your reply. A mechanic came and looked at it . He sucked the gad out and put a fresh gas after he had changed the battery. And he said it is the fuel pomp and not the cranck sensor . I dont know, and have no one to help me . I am going by what he said . Thanks for your reply again .

Note that if the crankshaft position sensor fails to provide a signal that the engine is rotating, the ECU will shut off the fuel pump. There is a proper test procedure for the fuel pump, but it involves special equipment to connect to the ECU wiring harness (see below). Without that, it is possible to connect power to the fuel pump to activate it and test output at the Schrader valve.
