Reduce Engine Oil Level warning

I had my oil changed a month ago, but today the car threw the warning to reduce the oil level. I am sure I didn't GAIN oil in the last month, and if it was overfull I would have gotten the warning earlier.

So I am wondering if it's a bad sensor or a clogged filter (as in, the mechanic didn't change the filter). Is there a way to check for sure?

Anyone else get this warning randomly?

Could be that coolant is leaking into the engine oil. What color is the oil on your dipstick? Did you check the coolant level? Did you check the oil filler cap?

I checked the oil filler cap and the oil. I have no dipstick. Not foamy or bubbly. Seems okay. I did not check the coolant level, but I will. Thanks!

EDIT: I checked the coolant as well. Looks fine. So is the coolant level. I also checked the area around the head gasket, no oil. I have driven at least 60 miles freeway since then, and the warning has not come back. I am starting to lean towards the oil filter being gummy or the sensor going out. If it comes back though, I will have my mech recheck the oil level and perhaps drain out a bit. Then maybe a flush, sensor replacement and refill.

DId you check the oil level in dyno mode? It shows the exact amount of engine oil in the display.

Mine is between 7.5-7.8L.

What mis3 says is correct. Be advised, if your sensor is faulty, it will start doing this especially if you drive the car hard now and then. Mine was showing a litre and half short of oil when it says reduce oil level. I use the dip stick I have now and then to check whats the level. Best bet would be to replace the sensor or get a dip stick and check.

I am having trouble doing the dyno mode check. It tells me it's checking...then nothing happens. I am sure I am missing a step.

For my 2004 CLK320, this is how I go to dyno mode. Make sure the car is in level ground and not driven for at least an hour.

1. Set the display to temperature.
2. Put key to position 1
3. Press the reset button 3 times. You wil hear a beep and the display will go into dyno mode.
4. Go to the next dyno screen, the oil level will show "-" (or blank)
5. Start the car and the exact oil level will show.

Don't even have to start the car, just position two with the ignition on should do... When the engine's turning, the volume decreases, since the oil is being circulated around the engine.

Right.
I usually check and then drive off.
Fun to see the oil level goes up and down while driving!
