Gear box broken? won't change up or down CLK 500
Hello this is my first post
I bought a 2003 CLK 500 had it less than a month
Today I started the engine and put the car into reverse a bit sooner than I normally would
When I did this the car clunked and jolted back, then It did the same when I put it into drive (but jolted forwards instead)
The car will drive but wont change up or down a gear it stays in 1st gear,
The tip tronic won't respond either
Also the car shows it's in park 'P' while driving then goes to 'D' after a while
It does seem to be making a bit of a whining noise too
Iv only managed to drive it slowly round my road
I can put the car in drive, park, reverse and neutral, its not stuck in drive.
Also I did an ODBII scan and it showed no codes, was hoping it would.
Am I looking at a new gearbox or something less major?
Thank you in advance for any help it's very much appreciated

Jay,
Your transmission is in limp mode because of some major issue with it. I suggest you get it scanned with a scanner that can read the Mercedes-specific codes. I'm pretty sure there will be a code when this happens.

Thanks for the reply Anker
I was thinking that mercedes might need a proper scanner, my one is a Chinese ELM327.
Ill get a mobile mechanic to scan it tomorrow.
Im guessing even though there is no engine light there could still be codes somewhere, hopefully anyway.

You will need to use a scanner that can read MBZ proprietary systems. Generic OBDII scanners only rad code from the ECU, but it's your TCU that needs to be scanned. Of course the dealer's SDS (Star Diagnosis) does this, but also iCarsoft has a few products (i980 and MB-II) that will work, too.
