how to set up garage door opener without the remote?

If your opener uses the digital rolling code system (most modern ones do), then you might be able to do it without a remote. Most of these openers have a "learn" button on their housings or inside control panel. If so, then press that to put the opener in learning mode, then press Homelink button in the car.
If that does not work, then you'll need to get your hands on a remote that is compatible with your opener. Home Depot sells generic ones that might work, depending on your opener model.

Just did this on the new to me 2014 e350 today. You will need the remote.
If you have a rolling code garage door opener, it is a two step process: First pair the car to the remote, then pair the car with the garage door opener with the learn button on the garage door opener.
I had my usual difficulty till I finally remembered that it was a two step process.
Good luck.
