W209 generator wear
Hi MBworld,
Just pulled the generator off my CLK320CDI intending to change the voltage regulator and discovered this:
I would really appreciate if some body could tell meh if it is too far gone to add a new voltage regulator?

Here is the picture. Worn out or not?
Dear Rodney, I very much appreciate your reply. I actually did attach a picture in the original post. But somehow it appears all black to other users of MBWorld. I have attached it again and now at least my son can see it right. What I am in doubt about is whether the contact points are too far worn to accept a new voltage regulator and actually work properly. SO any input regarding that is very welcome. I think you are going to need a new alternator. That outer brush contact surface on the rotor pole is deeply worn. It should look just like the inner contact surface. If you have a Bosch alternator, you can buy a rebuild kit of just the rotor and bearings, but the Valeo is not rebuildable. You will also need a new regulator (as I am sure its outer brush is defective). At this point, you're likely better off buying a whole unit, with the regulator and all ready to install. Here in the USA, several of our retail auto parts stores (Advance Auto, Autozone, etc.) sell a rebuilt unit with a lifetime warranty for around $200. OEM new is more like $450. I put an Advance Auto brand reman on in my SL550. It was stamped "China", but it was the OEM Bosch alternator, just rebuilt in China.

Dear Rodney,
Thanks for reassuring me about the state of the generator. My own assesment was also that it was way goen. Just wanted to make sure that it wasn't a fancy new way to make these contact surface. I ordered a new generator, complete with regulator installed it (a lot of work) and now the car charges nicely again.
All thé best, Claus
