TPMS issue

2009 CLK550

For the last month or so has been giving me red warning sign very often about 'check tire pressure'. I've gotten pressure and tires checked multiple times at the place where I get my new tires but the warning lights keeps coming back after a few days.

Are you resetting the parameters on the MFD when you alter the pressures?

Maybe replace sensors?
A good (tire) shop can diagnose the signal and see what the deal is.
If you need a sensor..

Our cars do not use a specifics tpms valve, as would be found in the link above. It is a simple use of the abs sensors, hence requires resetting of the system.

Yes they do.

They don't measure exact pressure, just differential form what you reset ti at, but all four wheels have a TPMS sensor and metal valve. Assuming your car has the option, that is.

The majority do not. The majority use the ABS/ wheel speed sensors to calculate. My car has this option; functioning, and is absent of any additional sensor other than the ABS. There is no obvious mention of a specific TPMS sensor on WIS.

Perhaps there are two systems, however I can not rationalise a reason in opting for a system that complicates matters at additional cost, providing no more information than the pressure monitoring that I have on my CLK.

There are two systems - the low range system which uses the wheel speed sensors, and the high range which uses TPMS sensors inside the tires.

My 2006 CLK350 used the ABS (which I liked better), my 2009 CLK550 has TPMS, and I've had a couple of sensors just rot and fall apart. My local tire guy replaces them for $100 and told me that they have been required on vehicles sold in the US after September 1, 2007 as a result of the Ford Explorer/Firestone rollover issue from the late 90's.....

I used to not care much for TPMS. In the early days of the in-tire systems, they made tire changes much more expensive as installers were often charging over $25/per tire for the "service kits", and some installers wouldn't even deal with them for fear of breaking something. Also, they were bad to give erroneous warnings when there were large temperature changes. Often, they didn't actually show the pressure in each tire, but just used a single MIL on the dash.

Today's modern systems are much better. I like seeing the pressure in each tire, and most all tire installers now deal with the systems. The service kits are fairly inexpensive now, and many installers don't even require them (it's just an o-ring anyhow). I have not had one fail (yet - I am sure it will happen), but after dealing with tire and rim issues on the SL, I am very happy with its TPMS system. I went through a series of tire issues where i had punctures and a cracked rim, so it is nice to be able to quickly check pressures before starting a drive to know everything is doing well.
