Ive decided to bite the bullet and get a timing chain kit fitted to my 2006 clk 200 m271 engine .
Can anyone suggest what parts ultimately I should really have replaced ie sprockets etc over and above the std chains guides etc to reduce the chance of future probs

Its a Febi kit as seen in attached piccy .
That kit is going to require removing the timing chain cover. If you are just worried about the chain stretching or breaking, I'd replace it using the draw-in method from the top. The slides and oil pump chain usually don;'t fail.

Ive probably scared myself reading up on the probs with the M271 engine and not aware if some or all the problems were improved by my year 2006 .
Someone had told me that the sprockets are known for early wear due to poor quality and then the chain can jump a couple of teeth or so ?
Ok thanks again . I had read it was also because of wear on the teeth of the sprockets . Doesnt sound too expensive labour wise doing it the draw-in method .
Reason I ask is I have requested some quotes just for Timing Belt/Tensioner to get done .
Times quoted range from 8hrs to 16hrs .
Prices from £795 incl to £1200 incl for the above job .
Not sure if those garages are quoting the job as the front cover etc off rather than draw through or just because we have next to nobody in Fife Scotland that
will do this type of work on a Merc .

It's "ASRA", which an abbreviation for "Arbeitstexte, Standardtexte, Richtzeiten and Arbeitswerte" The English translation is "operation texts, standard texts, flat rates and work units". It's MBZ's official book rates from WIS (their dealership workshop system). Basically, MBZ pays ASRA book rates for warranty work, and most dealerships charge based on these rates, though they are welcome to charge any price they want as we have a free market system. Of course to remain competitive, most charge based on ASRA, maybe adding an hour or so clean-up, intake, car wash, etc.
Hi there ,I am a qualified vehicle tech and have good varied experience on different makes of vehicles but you cannot beat when considering something for the first time talking to those who alraedy have experience. CLK 200 kompressor.im looking at buying one beautiful condition cabriolet but am told they suspect the timing chain has jumped and from what i have asked i suspect this too. when this happens does it always damage the valves / head ?
