Knocking from suspension, which bush is which?
Hi,
I have some knocking noises coming from my suspension but don't know which bush is which when it comes to ordering and replacing. Does anyone have any pics / diagrams of which component is which for both the front and the back and how to's would be really handy if any one has any.
I appreciate that it may not be the bushes and possibly a shock or spring but thought the bushes would be the easiest place to start
Its a 2008 W209 CLK 320 diesel
Thanks

A good test to perform is to determine whether the rattle occurs under acceleration or braking over a bump or hole. If it disappears under those conditions its a trailing arm that's bad, otherwise its one of the other bushings. What this test determines is whether its longitudinal or vertical movement that causes the noise.

Thanks for the reply, it happens going over bumps, I haven;t noticed hearing anything at all during acceleration or breaking. So what does that mean?

Sorry, I'm lost.
I don't hear any knocking accelerating or braking but do hear the knocking when going over bumps or mainly over uneven ground

I assume this is the front suspension? If so, there are two common sources of noise. One is the anti-sway bar bushing and the other is the busing on the torque strut, a.k.a. upper control arm. It can be difficult to determine which it is unless you can duplicate the noise on a lift and isolate which part causes it with a mechanic's stethoscope.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
Just wondering if anyone has any diagrams or pictures and possibly even part numbers which will show me which bush is which and will also help me find some guides?
It is mainly the front but would also like some information for the back if possible please

These parts diagrams show the two front control arms:

For the anti-sway bar bushings, I need your VIN to lookup the proper parts.
