Clk 320 cdi 2009 Click on Key Turn & Noise from rear

HELP ! Car has been in a garage for last 2 years and on trying the key, there is a click from the front (starter does not turn) and a whirring/humming noise from the back which lasts about 30 seconds. Battery is ok, and was disconnected throughout the 2 years. It has fuel, and has hardly been driven. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance

Humming noise is fuel pump. Do the instrument lights dim when you hear the click. If they do, your battery is dead, the terminals loose, or the ground connection bad. If no dimming your starter is bad.

Hi Anker. Thanks for responding. I have just tried starting it. The instrument lights remain on brightly when I turn the key, and the starter sounds like its turning by a very small fraction aswell.

Forget whether lights are bright or not. CHeck the battery voltage. It needs to be 12.6v at rest, no less than 11v when cranking. If it's low, you need a new battery. Sitting (even disconnected) for 2 years without periodic charging will likely kill it.

Just to close off this thread, the problem was due to the battery.
