How’s this for economy?

The CLK really impressed me yesterday. In everyday driving in my 5 722.6 CLK220 I average between 32 and 36mpg (imp) on a tank. Which is pretty shocking for what’s supposed to be an economical diesel, but it’s just an underpowered and heavy car, particularly around town, where with no particularly bad traffic my town figures are about 20mpg. The CLK220 is known to be poor on fuel though. My 270cdi used to average 42mpg driven with a heavy foot.

However after filling up, and jumping on the motorway, 50mph cruise for just over an hour, it surpassed what I thought it could achieve! So I pulled into the service station to get a picture, else I’d never believe it!

Although it lacks punch, it’s nice to know that even with near 160k miles, not only can it hit 140, it can also be incredibly economical!

Wow 70 mpg is astonishing for ANY car. I had to adjust my reading glasses to be sure I wasn't misreading that figure in the above photograph. Hats off to Mercedes engineers.

Yea the cluster is pretty much spot on, when I record my Ls and mileage it reads pretty accurate.

My half tank range was at one point 480miles!
