Transmission noise when driving like
So I noticed today while driving down the highway a rattling noise it sounded as if rocks pummeling my car but whenever I put it in neutral the noise went away I’m very concerned any ideas

Well I figured it out when I pulled off the highway I put the car in neutral and it was very quiet because the belt wasn’t spinning as much. Then I reved the engine in nurturant to really hear it making it kind of noise well after I did that three times all the sudden the battery light came on in the car started overheating I knew right away it was a belt not the transmission . So the noise was actually broken belt slipping The hood and engine compartment area

Probably the tensioner or idler pulley has failed. This happened several times on my C240. Once, it shredded the belt and sucked all the pieces into the alternator, and coated everything with a fine layer of molten rubber. It took several hours to clean up that mess.

All the pulleys are spinning perfectly fine so I don’t know what’s causing this but this is the third belt the main concern is I may have debris from the previous belt locking up on me causing some of the belt material to melt on the pulley filling in the pulley groves ans making them uneven and I’m wondering if that debris is causing uneven wear

You must be posting from a phone with auto-correct. 
Make sure the ribs on the pulleys themselves are not broken or cracked. The bearings may be fine, but even small defects in those ribs can shred a belt.
