TRUNK LID PROBLEM

`

I have a 2003 CLK500 and the trunk lid has become a little

heavier to open and once open unless held it will slam down -

After doing a search and asking several people I am still not

sure if the problem requires new springs or new struts as I have

been told both are the problem -

Has anyone encountered this problem recently and how did you

fix it - springs or struts -

Thank-You
D.B.

Update -

The W209 trunk lid uses a spring on each side

for tension to keep the lid up -

The right spring broke and the lid would not stay up -

I ordered new springs at the dealership -

They are only available in pairs -

The springs arrived 2 days later and after picking them

up I drove to Eastside Auto Salon in Bellevue where

Ben installed them - took all of 2 minutes a side -

Good as new -

Thank-You
D.B.

Own 2005 CLK500, but drive 2011 Sienna :)
Are you referring to the gas lifters or the actual springs?

CLK W209
What did they charge you for those parts, if you dont mind? I’ve still both springs, but they’re now adjusted to the maximum effect slot, and if I’m parked on a steep incline, or if it’s windy, the boot can sometimes fall down on my head!

On my 2003 CLK500 there are only springs - one on each side -

They come two to a package when you order -

Un-installed the springs are about 5 inches long -

Not sure about other CLK500's but on mine there

is more than one hole to connect the springs so as

to adjust the tension - I was told at the dealership

that these holes were designed in to adjust

the tension - ie. - if the car has a rear spoiler or not -

Thank-You

I think the total was $33.05 which included tax -

The springs were not in stock and had to be ordered -

They arrived in two days -

You do not realize how heavy the trunk lid is until the

spring breaks and it slams down on your head -

Yes I have a coupe -

So the convertible trunk lid has struts / shocks...

No wonder I was getting different answers -
